Cherry picking heaven

This weekend we went out to Hood River and found an amazing little farm trying out U-Pick for the first time. We followed the hand-drawn signs from the main road, and wound back and around until we found the farm. We were greeted by a lovely woman and her son, given a big bucket, and pointed towards four varieties of cherries. It was incredible! I’ve seen cherry trees, but these trees were like a true testament to the magic of pruning. So many cherries, right at arms length! It was overwhelming to tell you the truth. We had to be very discerning looking at how easy it would be to just pick as many cherries as were hanging low but knowing we’d never eat that many, even if we froze a bunch. So, we compromised, picked a little more than half a bucket, took some to some friends, gorged ourselves (mainly while we were cherry picking) and then did end up freezing a large bag of them. It was a success!

I am continually amazed at the bounty that the NW has in fresh fruit and produce! I am going to savor these cherries and pull them out in January when I need a reminder of what warm, sunny days are like! Then I’ll make a pie :) .
