Hello there! These are the first clues of the Where in the World…? series happening here this week. Just leave a comment and try to guess where I am! The first four correct will win a print that I’ll mail to you upon my return home. Don’t worry if you think the comments already there are correct–give it a shot, you might be surprised where I actually am. Good luck!

looks like beautiful Alaska!..?? gorgeous, wherever it is.
Hmm.. somewhere off the coast of Alaska? Sorry, that isn’t very specific!
Cooper River, Alaska ???
It looks very much like Alaska! So beautiful!
My guess is the coast of Norway, perhaps somewhere in a four hour radius of Bergen:
1. I’m not convinced it’s Alaska. Tricia said “I will be embarking on an exciting adventure and traveling far from home.” Alaska’s not far enough from Oregon to really fit the bill here.
2. She said she’d be gone for 7 days. 7 days worth of photos from Alaska are not going to be all that different from each other…and it would be not as fun of a challenge to guess photos from the same state. But that’s my biased opinion.
3. Where in the world are there glaciers that are easily accessible, yet “far from home,” home being Oregon? Well, New Zealand for starters. But only 7 days in New Zealand? I’m biased, but if I were going, I would spend at least 2 weeks if the flight is 5-6 hours to Hawaii and another 14-16 hours from Hawaii.
Not that Portland to Europe is all that much shorter…and I guess we’ll have to see where tomorrow’s photo is from, but I’m leaning towards Europe. It could be Iceland–but Iceland doesn’t have such tall mountains on the coast. It could potentially be Chile as well…but I still think Europe’s a safer guess for a 7 day trip.
4. So. After that convoluted mental exercise, Norway came to mind. Looking at the coast and thinking about a trip of only 7 days, Svalbard and the other northern glaciers are out of the running. They’re cool, but if you only have 7 days…and are flying into Oslo…it’s probably not worth the time, unless you’re a geologist (I would LOVE to go someday, but it’s low on the budget priority list right now!).
5. So central Norway it is…looking at GoogleMaps, trying to find a place that has mountains, glaciers, is on the coast, has islands and is relatively close to a medium size city, and the region around Bergen pops up on the map. It would be a bit of a drive, but Bergen to Flora, which looks like it has glaciers nearby, is a little under 4 hours.
So, um…after all this, I’m still not 100% convinced, but the geography major in me (yes, I’m a nerd), had a lot of fun whittling down the myriad possibilities to some more reasonable possibilities. Of course, if I’m totally wrong and it is Alaska…well…that’s cool, too!
Can’t wait to see tomorrow’s photos–these are gorgeous, Tricia!
Your pics are fabulous!
These could be taken in TIERRA DEL FUEGO. That was my first thought.
patagonia?
Hmmm, I do believe Alaska could still be considered far from home, and the travels to Alaska from Oregon/back can be quite diverse especially if entering into Canada too. Norway could be it, but seems sort of to far for just seven days. . . then again? Mmmm, I guess I’ll go for Alaska, but must say Norway would be awesome – so close to Switzerland and all!
I second the Alaska guess! So gorgeous, wherever it is. Hope you are soaking up every second of that beautiful scenery!
I think you are in SE Alaska!?!
Okay, first of all “7 days worth of photos from Alaska are not going to be all that different from each other” is SO wrong. Alaska is practically half the size of the rest of the US and it is INCREDIBLY diverse- even just in the tiny SE region.
My guess is cruising through Southeast Alaska. Although that last photo does throw me a bit.
Renai, fair enough…and to be honest, I haven’t actually been to Alaska. Looking back, it was very late, after a loooooong day when I started this post, and I will fuly admit my husband was laughing at me a bit at how seriously I was taking it!
Like I said…the next photo will help narrow down a continent a lot, I think!
Norway was my guess too…but if I have to pick some place different than Finland. Keep those awesome photos coming Tricia (the second one is especially kick-ass)!
I would guess Norway too, but the only glaciers at sea or water there is is at Svalbard, and Svalbard is not as mountainous. So I am shifting my guess to a completely different part of the world; Argentina! They have a wonderful glacier by fresh water, as well as powerful mountains and can yield amazing photography and diversion. Anywhere close?
I was going to say Norway as well… but I honestly have no clue!
Wherever you are, it certainly looks beautiful!
i vote for alaska somewhere — on a cruise perhaps?
Lena- I was born and raised in Juneau, so I’m a little defensive
GORGEOUS!! JEALOUS!!!
Well I am just having a guess, but is it Antartica?
